The brain is responsible for everything in our body. And the manifestation or level of development of any physical quality is also the result of the brain.
In this article, we will talk about flexibility.
Flexibility - the ability of a person to perform movements with a large amplitude. Recall the statistics - in people with disabilities, flexibility lags behind by 10-20% (sometimes more).
Undeveloped flexibility = difficulties in mastering motor skills, limiting the manifestation of strength, speed and coordination abilities, reducing the efficiency of work, increasing the likelihood of injuries to the ODE.
From my experience, I have not seen a child with ASD who has a good development of flexibility. There is hypermobility or insufficient mobility of the joints and ligaments.
In sports, there is a golden rule - " what is strained, then relax." It's about the muscles :) So, the ability to conduct high-quality and safe stretching is simply necessary for an AFC coach.
When choosing exercises, especially in a group lesson, it is necessary to take into account the individual characteristics of each child and understand whether everyone needs stretching and in what dosage.
Stretching is in most cases the least favorite part of the lesson for children with autism, and we must create a comfortable psychological environment by selecting the correct dosage and complexity of exercises, and ensure technical safety.
Stretching exercises for children with ASD are always accompanied by pain, and it is very important not to harm the child from the first approach, so as not to get unwanted behavior and rejection of your classes in response.
Developing flexibility in children with ASD is difficult.
According to the form of manifestation, it can be active (performing a movement based on one's own efforts) and passive (under the influence of external forces - the efforts of a partner, external weights, etc.).
According to the method of manifestation, flexibility can be dynamic (in motion) and static (in poses).
Children with autism almost always need a physical prompt and it is very important to know the limit of your pressure/extension/twisting of the student, you need to feel the tension of every muscle and maximum, especially with non-verbal children.
Stretch safely: smoothly, slowly, without jerks, at first with a minimum score in fixation (start with 2-3 seconds and gradually increase, based on the child's psychoemotional state).
Start with the simplest exercises, test, determine the most stationary joints, reveal their potential.
You can use only 3 exercises at each lesson for a whole month to come to their comfortable and more independent performance on the part of the child. Stretching with children with ASD is a kind of zen in which the coach must fully immerse himself and feel the child's state at the cellular level. Then everything will work out.
